The Eigenfactor® algorithm is described in a series of scholarly publications and specified in detailed in our technical specification. The algorithm that we use to map the structure of science, known as the Map Equation or InfoMap, is described in Rosvall and Bergstrom (2008) and Rosvall et al. (2010). Extensions are presented in Rosvall and Rosvall (2010) and Rosvall and Bergstrom (2011). A few of the algorithms and innovations presented, including the Eigenfactor Recommends™ article recommendation system, are patent pending. These require written permission from the University of Washington for their use.
